“You like him, don’t you?”
“N.. no, I don’t!”
“Oh yes, you do. It’s written all over your face, so stop denying it.”
It couldn’t be that obvious, she thought. I mean, I know I look at him sometimes, but I do try to turn away as much as I could.
“So, going to stop denying? Or are you just going to keep up this whole fake I-don’t-like-him scheme? I mean, you practically look away from him each time he turns.”
There she was, thinking how perfect her Don’t-Look-At Him plan was, when actually it was what made it so obvious. She hung her head. “Ok, fine. I like him. Happy?”
“I knew it,” her friend smiled in triumph. “Let’s go home now.”
“That’s it? You called me out here just to make me confess in front of you?” she couldn’t believe it.
Her friend merely smiled and ran. “I’m off. See you tomorrow!” she shouted and disappeared.
She stared into nothingness. What was with her friend?
She walked slowly. She made her way to her locker where she took her bag and other things she needed. She closed the locker door and headed home. On the way, she looked here and there for no reason. Why did she feel like someone was following her? Was it a human? Or was it just a cat or dog? Or maybe it was just her imagination getting too sensitive to her surroundings?
She walked on, ignoring the weird feeling she was getting. She tried to take her mind off the nagging feeling that was indicating to her something was not right. She switched into thinking mode. Why was her friend acting so weird today? Why did she call her out of the crowd to ask that certain question? Ok, she didn’t want everyone to know that she had a crush on him. For that she thanked her. But for what reason did she act weirdly today?
The whole time in class, she was writing something on a piece of paper. She had smiled to herself. At certain times, when she thought she wasn’t looking, she had taken a few peeks at her. It was like she was making sure she wasn’t taking note of what she was doing.
So what exactly was wrong with her friend?
Rustle.
She turned.
“Who’s there?” she asked.
No answer.
“Who’s there? Show yourself.”
Still no answer.
She was just about to walk off when she heard the sound of someone getting smacked on the head. She walked towards the sound which seemed to be from a bush. She quietly treaded on the ground. Without hesitating, she looked over the bush just to get a surprise.
“What are you doing here?” she asked in surprise.
Who did she see behind the bush but her friend and crush. They were squatting and had big eyes, surprised that they had been found. They quickly stood up and brushed off the leaves on their clothes.
After a while, they still pretended like she was not there and went on brushing their clothes. She got annoyed. “Excuse me? You’ve not answered me yet.”
“I...” her friend said, then stopped.
Silence.
“Well?” she questioned them, although it was more to her friend. She hardly dared to look at her crush in the face.
“I.. We..” her friend began again. “Argh! I’m going. Do what you have to.”
Her friend ran off. “HEY!” she shouted.
But her friend was too fast. She was not in the running team for nothing.
What did she mean ‘Do what you have to’? she thought. Was she supposed to do something? She looked at her crush and blushed. She then understood what her friend meant. She wanted her to confess to him.
She took a deep breath.
“I..” they both opened their mouths at the same time and stopped. They blushed.
“You first,” they said at the same time and flushed brighter.
“I’ll go first,” her crush said and he took a deep breath.
“Miyumi, I’ve been liking you for a long time. Every time I see you, I get this feeling of happiness that I’ve never gotten before. When I see you with other guys, I feel annoyed. I know this is bold of me but...” he paused, took a deeper breath. “will you be my girlfriend?” and looked down.
Miyumi was astonished. He, Chinen Yuri aka her crush, liked her? And for a very long time? How come she didn’t know? She looked at his bent head and smiled. He even looked cute when he wasn’t facing her. Without waiting any longer, she hugged him. “I will,” she whispered.
Though surprised, Chinen responded by pressing his lips against hers and hugging her tight.
After what seemed like eternity, they broke off with bright red faces. Miyumi looked at him and giggled. “What?” he asked.
“You look cute,” she smiled.
“So do you,” he replied. “Mi-chan.”
Miyumi giggled again and said, “Chii-kun!”
Chinen smiled and placed his lips on hers once more.
